PART A

1a

Define a function. List their advantages and disadvantages.

2 marks

Answer

A function is a self-contained block of code designed to perform a specific task. It is defined once and can be invoked or called multiple times throughout a program, allowing for modularity and the encapsulation of logic.

Advantages:
  • Reusability: Eliminates redundant code by allowing the same logic to be executed from different parts of an application.
  • Maintainability: Changes made to the function logic are automatically reflected wherever the function is called, simplifying debugging and updates.
  • Modularity: Breaks down complex problems into smaller, manageable sub-tasks, improving code readability and organization.
  • Abstraction: Hides complex implementation details from the user, exposing only the necessary interface.
Disadvantages:
  • Overhead: Frequent function calls can introduce minor performance latency due to stack frame allocation and context switching.
  • Complexity in Debugging: Excessive nesting or deeply recursive functions can make the execution flow difficult to trace.
  • Memory Usage: In some languages, improper use of recursion or large local scopes within functions can lead to increased memory consumption on the call stack.
1b

Why we need scripting languages? Explain in brief.

3 marks

Answer

Scripting languages are essential in modern web development because they provide the bridge between static content and dynamic, interactive user experiences. Their primary necessity arises from the following capabilities:

  • Dynamic Content Generation: Unlike static HTML, which displays fixed information, scripting languages allow web pages to change their content in real-time based on user input, time, or database queries.
  • Client-Side Interactivity: Languages like JavaScript enable the browser to respond to user actions (such as clicking buttons, form validation, or animations) without requiring a round-trip to the server, significantly reducing latency and improving User Experience (UX).
  • Server-Side Logic: Scripting languages (e.g., PHP, Node.js, Python) facilitate communication with databases, handle authentication, manage sessions, and process complex business logic that cannot be performed by the client browser alone.
  • Automation and Glue Code: They are often used as glue languages to integrate disparate software components, automate repetitive tasks, and manage system configurations, offering a higher level of abstraction than compiled languages like C or C++.
  • Rapid Development: Because they are typically interpreted rather than compiled, scripting languages allow for faster prototyping and iterative development, as developers can execute code immediately without waiting for long compilation cycles.
In summary, scripting languages provide the flexibility and responsiveness required to transform static documents into fully functional, interactive web applications.
