Answer PaperPaper Code: 136AGMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Part A is compulsory (25 marks). Part B (50 marks): Answer any one question from each unit (10 marks each).

Part A

1a

List the fields that form the basis for AI.

2 marks

Answer

The fields that form the basis for Artificial Intelligence include Philosophy (logic and methods of reasoning), Mathematics (formal representation, probability, and algorithms), Psychology (understanding human cognition and behavior), Computer Engineering (hardware and architecture), Control Theory (feedback systems), Linguistics (syntax and semantics), and Economics (decision theory and utility).

1b

Define alpha and beta values in a game tree.

3 marks

Answer

In the context of the Alpha-Beta Pruning algorithm used for game tree search, Alpha (α) and Beta (β) represent the bounds on the possible values that the nodes can take, allowing the algorithm to prune branches that do not influence the final decision.

Alpha (α) is the best value that the Maximizer currently can guarantee at that level or above. It is initialized to negative infinity and increases as the search progresses.

Beta (β) is the best value that the Minimizer currently can guarantee at that level or above. It is initialized to positive infinity and decreases as the search progresses.

Pruning occurs when α ≥ β, as this indicates that the current path will not be chosen by the opponent, making further exploration of that subtree unnecessary.
