JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech I Year CHEMISTRY Previous Question Paper (March/April - 2023 - R18)

B.Tech | I Year | I Semester | R18 | March/April - 2023

Answer PaperPaper Code: 151AFMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1.a

Define the term ligand. Give examples.

2 marks

Answer

A ligand is an ion or a neutral molecule that possesses at least one lone pair of electrons, which it donates to a central metal atom or ion to form a coordinate covalent bond in a coordination complex. Examples include neutral molecules such as water (H2O) and ammonia (NH3), and anions such as the chloride ion (Cl-) and cyanide ion (CN-).

1.b

Calculate the bond order N2.

3 marks

Answer

The nitrogen molecule (N2) consists of 14 electrons. According to the molecular orbital theory, the electronic configuration is: σ1s2, σ*1s2, σ2s2, σ*2s2, π2px2 = π2py2, σ2pz2.

The number of bonding electrons (Nb) is 10, and the number of antibonding electrons (Na) is 4.

Bond Order = (Nb - Na) / 2 = (10 - 4) / 2 = 3

Thus, the bond order of N2 is 3, indicating a triple bond between the two nitrogen atoms.
