Part A

1a

What is band structure of solids.

2 marks

Answer

The band structure of a solid describes the range of energy levels that electrons within the material are allowed to occupy, and the gaps between these ranges where electrons cannot exist. It arises from the overlapping of atomic orbitals in a crystal lattice, which causes discrete atomic energy levels to broaden into continuous energy bands. The two most significant bands are the valence band, which is fully or partially occupied by electrons, and the conduction band, which lies at a higher energy level. The separation between these bands, known as the forbidden energy gap, determines the electrical conductivity of the material, classifying it as a conductor, semiconductor, or insulator.

1b

How is portable water disinfected by ozonation?

2 marks

Answer

Ozonation is a process where ozone (O3) gas is bubbled through water to disinfect it. Ozone acts as a powerful oxidizing agent that destroys bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms by oxidizing their cellular components, such as proteins and lipids, effectively killing them or rendering them inactive. Unlike chlorination, ozonation does not leave behind harmful chemical residues or impart an unpleasant taste or odor to the water.
