Construct a plain scale of RF=1/40 to read meters and decimeters. Maximum length to be measured using it is 5 meters. Mark on it a distance of 3.4 m.

8 marks

Answer

To construct the plain scale:

  1. Calculate the Length of Scale (LOS): LOS = RF × Maximum Length = (1/40) × 5 m = (1/40) × 500 cm = 12.5 cm.
  2. Draw a line 12.5 cm long and divide it into 5 equal parts, each representing 1 meter.
  3. Divide the first part (0 to 1) into 10 equal subdivisions, where each subdivision represents 1 decimeter (1/10 of a meter).
  4. To mark 3.4 m, place the starting point at the 3m division and measure 4 subdivisions towards the right into the decimeter section.
b

Draw a diagonal scale of RF = 1/25 to read meters, decimeters and centimeters. The scale must be long enough to read 4 m. Mark off on this scale distance of 2.34 m and 0.68 m.

7 marks

Answer

To construct the diagonal scale:

  1. Calculate the Length of Scale (LOS): LOS = RF × Maximum Length = (1/25) × 4 m = (1/25) × 400 cm = 16 cm.
  2. Draw a rectangle of 16 cm length and a suitable height (e.g., 5 cm). Divide the length into 4 equal parts, each representing 1 meter.
  3. Divide the first part into 10 subdivisions, each representing 1 decimeter.
  4. Divide the height into 10 equal horizontal rows, each representing 1 centimeter.
  5. Draw diagonal lines from the division points on the top edge to the corresponding points on the bottom edge to enable reading centimeters.
  6. To mark 2.34 m, locate 2m on the main scale, 3 decimeters on the subdivision, and move up 4 units on the diagonal line.
  7. To mark 0.68 m, locate 0m on the main scale, 6 decimeters on the subdivision, and move up 8 units on the diagonal line.
