Explain the reactive force between two smooth surfaces in contact with each other.

7 marks

Answer

When two smooth surfaces are in contact, the interaction between them is characterized by the absence of frictional forces. The reactive force, commonly referred to as the normal reaction, is the force exerted by one surface on the other to prevent penetration.

  • The reactive force is always directed normal (perpendicular) to the common tangent plane at the point of contact.
  • Since the surfaces are smooth, there is no tangential component of the reaction force, meaning the reaction acts purely along the common normal.
  • If one surface is a point and the other is a plane, the reaction is perpendicular to the plane. If both surfaces are curved, the reaction acts along the line connecting the centers of curvature of the two surfaces at the point of contact.
  • The magnitude of the normal reaction is determined by the equilibrium conditions of the body, specifically balancing the applied external forces acting perpendicular to the contact surface.

A rope is tied horizontally between two buildings 30 m apart. A weight of 200 N is attached to it at its midpoint. Determine the angle the rope would make with the horizontal, if the tension developed in the rope is three times the weight of the body. Assume the string to be inextensible and neglect its weight. Also determine by how much the weight would sag.

8 marks

Answer

Let the tension in the rope be T and the weight of the body be W = 200 N. Given that T = 3W = 600 N. Let the angle the rope makes with the horizontal be θ. Considering the equilibrium of the point where the weight is attached, the vertical components of the tension must balance the weight:

2T sin(θ) = W

Substituting the given values:

2(3W) sin(θ) = W
6 sin(θ) = 1
sin(θ) = 1/6
θ = sin⁻¹(1/6) ≈ 9.59°

To find the sag h, we consider the geometry of the rope. The horizontal distance from the center to one building is 15 m. Using the tangent of the angle:

tan(θ) = h / 15
h = 15 tan(9.59°)
h ≈ 15 × 0.169 ≈ 2.535 m

The rope makes an angle of approximately 9.59° with the horizontal, and the weight causes a sag of approximately 2.535 m.
