Interpolate the value of y at

x = 2.5
from the data: x={0,1,2,3}, y={2,5,13,35}.

7 marks

Answer

Using Newton's forward difference formula, we construct the difference table for x = {0, 1, 2, 3} and y = {2, 5, 13, 35}:

xyΔyΔ²yΔ³y
02357
15812
21320
335

Here, x₀ = 0, h = 1, and the value to interpolate is x = 2.5. Thus, u = (x - x₀) / h = (2.5 - 0) / 1 = 2.5. Newton's forward difference formula is:

y(x) = y₀ + uΔy₀ + u(u-1)Δ²y₀ / 2! + u(u-1)(u-2)Δ³y₀ / 3!

Substituting the values y₀ = 2, Δy₀ = 3, Δ²y₀ = 5, and Δ³y₀ = 7:

y(2.5) = 2 + (2.5)(3) + (2.5)(1.5)(5) / 2 + (2.5)(1.5)(0.5)(7) / 6
y(2.5) = 2 + 7.5 + 9.375 + 2.1875 = 21.0625

Prove that

Δ∇ = Δ - ∇
and
E = 1 + Δ
, where Δ, ∇ and E are the forward, backward and shifting operators respectively.

Answer

To prove Δ∇ = Δ - ∇, we apply the operators to a function f(x):

Δ∇f(x) = Δ[f(x) - f(x-h)] = Δf(x) - Δf(x-h)
Δ∇f(x) = [f(x+h) - f(x)] - [f(x) - f(x-h)] = f(x+h) - 2f(x) + f(x-h)

Now consider (Δ - ∇)f(x):

(Δ - ∇)f(x) = Δf(x) - ∇f(x) = [f(x+h) - f(x)] - [f(x) - f(x-h)]
(Δ - ∇)f(x) = f(x+h) - 2f(x) + f(x-h)

Since both expressions yield the same result, Δ∇ = Δ - ∇. For the second identity, the forward difference operator is defined as Δf(x) = f(x+h) - f(x). The shifting operator E is defined as Ef(x) = f(x+h). Substituting this into the definition of Δ:

Δf(x) = Ef(x) - f(x) = (E - 1)f(x)

Therefore, Δ = E - 1, which implies E = 1 + Δ.
