JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech I Year ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND CIRCUITS Previous Question Paper (January/February - 2024 - R22)
Part-A is compulsory. Part-B consists of ten questions (2-11) carrying 10 marks each. Answer one question from each unit in Part-B.
Part A
What is diode?
Answer
A diode is a two-terminal electronic component that acts as a one-way switch for current. It is formed by joining a p-type semiconductor and an n-type semiconductor, creating a p-n junction. It allows current to flow easily in the forward bias direction while offering high resistance to current flow in the reverse bias direction.
Define cut-in voltage.
Answer
The cut-in voltage (also known as knee voltage or threshold voltage) is the minimum forward bias voltage required across the diode terminals to overcome the potential barrier at the p-n junction, after which the current through the diode increases exponentially. For Silicon diodes, this is approximately 0.7V, and for Germanium diodes, it is approximately 0.3V.
