Two dice are thrown the random variable is assigned to the sum. Write the distribution. Find the mean and variance.

15 marks

Answer

When two fair dice are thrown, there are 6 × 6 = 36 equally likely outcomes. Let X be the random variable representing the sum of the two dice. The possible values of X range from 2 to 12. The probability distribution P(X=x) is calculated by counting the number of ways to obtain each sum:

x23456789101112
P(X=x)1/362/363/364/365/366/365/364/363/362/361/36

The mean (expected value) E[X] is calculated as:

E[X] = Σ xP(x) = (2×1 + 3×2 + 4×3 + 5×4 + 6×5 + 7×6 + 8×5 + 9×4 + 10×3 + 11×2 + 12×1) / 36 = 252 / 36 = 7

To find the variance, we first calculate E[X²]:

E[X²] = Σ x²P(x) = (4×1 + 9×2 + 16×3 + 25×4 + 36×5 + 49×6 + 64×5 + 81×4 + 100×3 + 121×2 + 144×1) / 36 = 1974 / 36 ≈ 54.833

The variance Var(X) is given by:

Var(X) = E[X²] - (E[X])² = 54.833 - 7² = 54.833 - 49 = 5.833

If the probability distribution function of a continuous random variable is defined as

f(x) = k e-|x|, -∞ < x < ∞
. Find i) k ii) mean iii) variance.

8 marks

Answer

i) To find k, we use the property that the total area under the probability density function must be 1:

∫-∞∞ k e-|x| dx = 1

Since the function is symmetric about x=0, we can write:

2k ∫0∞ e-x dx = 1
2k [-e-x]0∞ = 1
2k (0 - (-1)) = 1 => 2k = 1 => k = 1/2

ii) The mean E[X] is given by:

E[X] = ∫-∞∞ x f(x) dx = ∫-∞∞ x (1/2) e-|x| dx

Since x e-|x| is an odd function, the integral over the symmetric interval (-∞, ∞) is 0. Thus, the mean is 0.

iii) The variance V[X] is given by E[X2] - (E[X])2. Since E[X] = 0, V[X] = E[X2]:

E[X2] = ∫-∞∞ x2 (1/2) e-|x| dx = ∫0∞ x2 e-x dx

Using the gamma function integral formula ∫0∞ xn e-ax dx = n! / an+1 with n=2 and a=1:

E[X2] = 2! / 13 = 2. Therefore, the variance is 2.
