a

Prove that R → S can be derived from the premises (P → Q), (Q → S), (¬R ∨ P) and Q.

8 marks

Answer

To derive R → S from the given premises, we use the rules of inference:

  1. P → Q (Premise 1)
  2. Q → S (Premise 2)
  3. ¬R ∨ P (Premise 3)
  4. Q (Premise 4)
  5. P → S (From 1 and 2 by Hypothetical Syllogism)
  6. R → P (From 3 by Implication Law: ¬R ∨ P ≡ R → P)
  7. R → S (From 6 and 5 by Hypothetical Syllogism)

Thus, R → S is derived.

b

Prove that (p → (q → r)) ⇔ ((p ∧ q) → r).

7 marks

Answer

To prove the equivalence (p → (q → r)) ⇔ ((p ∧ q) → r), we apply the logical equivalence rules:

p → (q → r) ≡ ¬p ∨ (q → r)
≡ ¬p ∨ (¬q ∨ r)
≡ (¬p ∨ ¬q) ∨ r
≡ ¬(p ∧ q) ∨ r
≡ (p ∧ q) → r

Since the expression can be transformed into the target expression using only logical equivalences (Implication Law, De Morgan's Law, and Associative Law), the two statements are logically equivalent.

An advertising agency has 1,000 clients. Suppose that T is the set of clients that use television advertising, R is the set of clients that use radio advertising, and N is the set of clients who use newspaper advertising. Suppose that |T| = 415, |R| = 350, |N| = 280, 100 clients use all 3 types of advertising, 175 use television and radio, 180 use radio and newspapers, and 165 use television and newspapers. Find:

  1. How many clients use radio and newspaper advertising but not television?
  2. How many clients use television and radio advertising but not newspapers?
  3. How many use television but do not use newspaper advertising and do not use radio advertising?
  4. How many clients do not use all three types of advertisements?
