JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech II Year DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS Previous Question Paper (March - 2022 - R16)
Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
Differentiate between relation schema and relation instance.
Answer
A relation schema is the logical design or blueprint of a relation, denoted by the relation name and a set of attributes (e.g., Student(ID, Name, Dept)). It is relatively static and defined during database design. In contrast, a relation instance is a snapshot of the data stored in the relation at a specific point in time, consisting of a set of tuples that satisfy the schema. While the schema remains constant, the instance changes frequently as data is inserted, updated, or deleted.
Define the terms Arity and Cardinality of a Relation.
Answer
Arity (or degree) of a relation is the number of attributes present in the relation schema. It represents the number of columns in the table and is generally fixed for a given relation.
Cardinality of a relation is the number of tuples (rows) currently present in the relation instance. Unlike arity, cardinality is dynamic and changes as rows are added to or removed from the database.
