Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART-A

125 marks
a

How does the ecosystem function?

2 marks

Answer

An ecosystem functions through two main processes: the flow of energy and the cycling of nutrients. Energy enters the system from the sun, flows through trophic levels via food chains and webs, and is eventually lost as heat. Simultaneously, essential nutrients are recycled between the biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) components of the environment.

b

What is bioaccumulation? Mention its demerits.

3 marks

Answer

Bioaccumulation is the gradual accumulation of substances, such as pesticides or heavy metals, in an organism's body over time because the rate of intake exceeds the rate of excretion or metabolic breakdown. Its demerits include toxicity to the organism, reproductive failure, disruption of endocrine systems, and biomagnification, where toxic concentrations increase as they move up the food chain.
