What is the importance of layered architecture in network models? Discuss in detail.
Answer
Layered architecture is fundamental to network design as it decomposes complex communication processes into smaller, manageable, and independent modules. This modularity provides several key advantages:
- Abstraction and Encapsulation: Each layer performs specific functions and hides the implementation details from the layers above and below. This allows developers to modify or upgrade one layer without affecting the entire system.
- Interoperability: Standardized interfaces between layers ensure that hardware and software from different vendors can communicate effectively, provided they adhere to the same protocol specifications.
- Ease of Troubleshooting: Since functions are isolated, network administrators can isolate faults to a specific layer, simplifying the debugging and maintenance process.
- Standardization: It promotes the development of modular protocols, allowing for independent evolution of technologies (e.g., updating physical layer hardware without changing application software).
- Scalability: New services or protocols can be added by introducing new layers or modifying existing ones, facilitating the growth of network capabilities.
Differentiate between TCP/IP network model and ISO-OSI reference model.
Answer
| Feature | OSI Model | TCP/IP Model |
|---|---|---|
| Layers | 7 Layers | 4 Layers |
| Approach | Model-first, then protocols | Protocol-first, then model |
| Layering | Strict separation of services, interfaces, and protocols | Loose separation; protocols are tightly coupled |
| Reliability | Supports both connection-oriented and connectionless communication | Primarily connection-oriented at Transport layer (TCP) |
| Development | Theoretical model developed by ISO | Practical model developed by DoD |
The OSI model is a conceptual framework that provides a clear distinction between services, interfaces, and protocols, making it an excellent teaching tool. In contrast, the TCP/IP model is a practical, implementation-oriented model that combines the Application, Presentation, and Session layers of the OSI model into a single Application layer, and the Data Link and Physical layers into a single Network Access layer. While OSI is more rigid and structured, TCP/IP is more flexible and serves as the foundation for the modern Internet.
