Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

In what way do operational semantics differ from denotational semantics?

2 marks

Answer

Operational semantics describe the meaning of a program by specifying the sequence of steps a virtual or physical machine takes to execute it. In contrast, denotational semantics define the meaning of a program by mapping it to mathematical objects, such as functions or values, focusing on what the program computes rather than how it executes.

b

A programming language can be compiled or interpreted. Give relative advantages and disadvantages of compilation and interpretation.

3 marks

Answer

Compilation offers faster execution speed and better optimization, but requires a separate compilation phase and makes debugging more complex. Interpretation allows for easier debugging and platform independence, but generally results in slower execution because the source code is analyzed and executed line-by-line during runtime.

c

Define Union type.
