Write the syntax of do-while loop in PHP and state its functionality.

2 marks

Answer

The syntax of the do-while loop in PHP is:

do {
    // code to be executed
} while (condition);

Functionality: The do-while loop is similar to the while loop, but it always executes the block of code at least once before checking the condition. The code inside the loop is executed, and then the condition is evaluated. If the condition is true, the loop continues to execute. If the condition is false, the loop terminates.

It is useful when you want to perform an action and then repeat it based on a condition, ensuring the action happens at least one time.

b

Differentiate between text files and binary files.

3 marks

Answer

The differentiation between text files and binary files is as follows:

FeatureText FilesBinary Files
ContentStore data as a sequence of characters, typically human-readable. Examples include .txt, .html, .css, .js files.Store data in its raw, unprocessed binary format. This data is not directly human-readable and can represent images, audio, executables, etc. Examples include .jpg, .mp3, .exe files.
EncodingCharacters are encoded using standards like ASCII or UTF-8. Special characters like newline ( ) and carriage return ( ) have specific meanings.No specific character encoding is applied. Data is stored as raw bytes.
ProcessingCan be opened and edited with simple text editors. Reading and writing involve character-by-character or line-by-line operations. Conversions between character representations and binary data may occur implicitly.Require specific applications or libraries to interpret and process the data correctly. Reading and writing involve byte-by-byte operations.
File SizeGenerally larger than binary files for the same amount of raw data due to character encoding overhead.More compact as data is stored in its native binary form.
PortabilityCan sometimes have issues with line ending conventions ( vs ) across different operating systems.Generally more portable across different systems as byte sequences are preserved.
