A worm is a standalone malicious software program that replicates itself to spread to other computers, typically utilizing a computer network to propagate. Unlike a virus, a worm does not require a host program or human intervention to execute and spread, often exploiting vulnerabilities in network services to infect systems, consume bandwidth, and deplete system resources.
What are preventive controls and Detective Controls?
Answer
Preventive controls are security measures designed to stop an unauthorized or unwanted event from occurring. Their primary objective is to inhibit threats before they can exploit a vulnerability. Examples include firewalls, encryption, strong authentication mechanisms, and physical locks.
Detective controls are designed to identify and alert security personnel when a security violation or unauthorized activity has occurred or is in progress. They do not prevent the event but provide the visibility necessary to initiate a response. Examples include intrusion detection systems (IDS), audit logs, security information and event management (SIEM) tools, and video surveillance.
