Main
Give overview of computer communications.
Answer
Computer communication refers to the process of transferring data between two or more computing devices via a transmission medium. It involves the exchange of information in the form of digital signals, enabling resource sharing, remote access, and distributed processing. The fundamental components of a communication system include the source, transmitter, transmission system, receiver, and destination.
Key aspects include:
- Data Representation: The format in which information is encoded, such as text, audio, video, or images.
- Transmission Modes: The direction of data flow, which can be simplex (one-way), half-duplex (two-way but not simultaneous), or full-duplex (simultaneous two-way).
- Protocols: A set of rules governing the exchange of data, ensuring that both sender and receiver interpret the signals identically.
- Network Topology: The physical or logical arrangement of the network nodes and connections.
Explain about different types of computer networks.
Answer
Computer networks are categorized primarily based on their geographical scale and the scope of their connectivity:
- Local Area Network (LAN): Designed for small geographical areas like a single office, building, or campus. They offer high data transfer rates and are typically owned and managed by a single organization.
- Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): Covers a larger area, such as an entire city. It often acts as a high-speed backbone connecting multiple LANs within a municipal region, frequently utilizing fiber-optic infrastructure.
- Wide Area Network (WAN): Spans a broad geographical area, such as a country, continent, or the entire globe. WANs use leased telecommunication lines, satellites, or radio links to connect smaller networks (LANs and MANs). The Internet is the most prominent example of a global WAN.
- Personal Area Network (PAN): A very small-scale network centered around an individual's workspace, typically connecting devices like smartphones, laptops, and tablets via technologies such as Bluetooth or USB.
- Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN): A LAN that uses wireless technology, such as Wi-Fi, instead of physical cables to connect devices within a limited range.
Define the terms Reliability, Routing, Interoperability and explain.
