Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
What are dual phase steels? Give examples and their applications.
Answer
Dual phase (DP) steels are a class of advanced high-strength steels characterized by a microstructure consisting of a soft, ductile ferrite matrix containing islands of hard martensite. The martensite provides high tensile strength, while the ferrite phase ensures good formability and ductility.
Examples include DP590, DP780, and DP980, where the number indicates the minimum ultimate tensile strength in MPa.
Applications include automotive structural components such as side impact beams, bumper reinforcements, and chassis parts, where a combination of high energy absorption during impact and complex shape forming is required.
Classify TRIP steels. Write down their composition, properties and uses.
Answer
TRIP (Transformation Induced Plasticity) steels are classified based on their microstructure and alloying elements, primarily categorized as first-generation TRIP steels (ferritic-bainitic-austenitic) and second-generation high-manganese TRIP steels.
Composition: They typically contain 0.1–0.4% Carbon, 1.0–2.5% Manganese, and 1.0–2.0% Silicon or Aluminum to stabilize retained austenite.
Properties: The defining characteristic is the presence of metastable retained austenite, which transforms into martensite during plastic deformation. This transformation provides a high work-hardening rate, excellent ductility, and superior energy absorption compared to conventional steels of similar strength.
Uses: They are extensively used in the automotive industry for complex structural parts that require deep drawing, such as front-end structures, B-pillars, and cross-members, as they offer an optimal balance between high strength and formability.
