Answer

Mining is the process of extracting valuable minerals or other geological materials from the earth, typically from an ore body, lode, vein, seam, or reef. It involves various techniques ranging from surface excavation to deep underground tunneling to recover resources essential for industrial and economic development.

Accidents in mines occur due to the hazardous nature of the working environment and can be broadly categorized as follows:

  • Falls of Ground: The collapse of the roof or sides in underground workings, which remains the leading cause of fatalities.
  • Explosions and Fires: Ignition of methane gas or coal dust, or spontaneous combustion of coal, leading to catastrophic loss of life and property.
  • Inundation: Sudden flooding of mine workings due to the breach of water-logged areas or surface water bodies.
  • Machinery and Transport Accidents: Injuries caused by heavy earth-moving equipment, conveyors, winding systems, or haulage vehicles.
  • Suffocation and Gas Poisoning: Exposure to toxic gases like carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, or oxygen deficiency in poorly ventilated areas.
  • Explosives Mishaps: Accidents occurring during the storage, transport, or blasting operations involving high explosives.

Answer

The Chasnala Mining Disaster, which occurred on December 27, 1975, in the Dhanbad district of Jharkhand, is one of the most tragic mining accidents in Indian history. The disaster took place at the Chasnala Colliery, owned by the Indian Iron and Steel Company (IISCO).

The accident was caused by a massive inundation. Miners were working in the underground seams when a wall separating the mine from an adjacent, water-logged abandoned mine collapsed. This breach allowed millions of gallons of water and sludge to rush into the active mine workings, trapping and drowning 372 miners instantly.

Key factors contributing to the tragedy included:

  • Inaccurate or outdated mine plans that failed to correctly identify the proximity of the water-logged abandoned workings.
  • Failure to maintain adequate safety barriers between the active mine and the water-filled voids.
  • Lack of early warning systems or emergency evacuation protocols that could have alerted the workers in time.

The aftermath of the disaster led to significant changes in Indian mining safety legislation, emphasizing the necessity of precise surveying, the maintenance of accurate mine plans, and stricter enforcement of safety regulations regarding water danger management under the Mines Act.
