With appropriate illustration, explain what perceptual selectivity is and how it influences our behavior.

15 marks

Answer

Perceptual selectivity is the process by which individuals filter out the vast amount of sensory information they encounter, focusing only on specific stimuli that are relevant or meaningful to them. Because the human brain cannot process every piece of data in the environment simultaneously, it acts as a selective filter, allowing only certain information to pass through to conscious awareness.

This process is governed by two main sets of factors:

  1. External Factors: These relate to the stimuli themselves, such as intensity (a loud noise), size (a large advertisement), contrast (a bright color against a dark background), repetition, and novelty.
  2. Internal Factors: These relate to the observer, including personal needs, motives, past experiences, personality, and expectations.

Illustration: Consider an employee walking through a crowded office. Despite the background noise of printers, phones, and multiple conversations, the employee immediately notices the sound of their own name being mentioned by a colleague. This is a classic example of perceptual selectivity; the brain has filtered out the 'noise' of the office environment and prioritized the stimulus that carries personal significance.

Influence on Behavior: Perceptual selectivity significantly impacts behavior in the following ways:

  1. Decision Making: Individuals make decisions based on the information they have perceived. If an employee selectively attends only to positive feedback and ignores constructive criticism, their future performance and behavior will be skewed by this incomplete data.
  2. Communication: People often hear what they want to hear. This selective perception can lead to misunderstandings, as individuals may filter out parts of a message that contradict their existing beliefs or attitudes.
  3. Motivation: Employees are more likely to be motivated by tasks or goals that align with their personal interests and values, as these are the stimuli they are most likely to select for attention.
  4. Interpersonal Relations: We form impressions of others based on selective traits. If we perceive someone as 'helpful' based on one interaction, we may selectively focus on their future helpful actions while ignoring behaviors that contradict that initial impression, thereby reinforcing our bias.
