What are the different types of errors that occur during measurement? Explain each of them in detail.

15 marks

Answer

Measurement errors represent the difference between the measured value and the true value of a quantity. These errors are broadly classified into three main categories: gross errors, systematic errors, and random errors.

1. Gross Errors: These are primarily caused by human mistakes in reading, recording, or calculating data. Examples include incorrect instrument adjustment, misreading a scale, or improper data recording. They can be minimized by taking multiple readings and ensuring careful observation.

2. Systematic Errors: These errors occur due to shortcomings in the instrument, environmental effects, or observational habits, and they consistently shift the measurement in one direction. They are further classified into:

  • Instrumental Errors: Caused by inherent defects in the instrument, such as friction in bearings, weak springs, or calibration inaccuracies.
  • Environmental Errors: Result from external conditions like temperature, pressure, humidity, or magnetic fields affecting the sensor performance.
  • Observational Errors: Caused by the observer, such as parallax error when reading a pointer against a scale from an incorrect angle.

3. Random Errors: These are unpredictable errors that remain after gross and systematic errors have been eliminated. They arise from unknown or stochastic fluctuations in the system, such as electrical noise or small, rapid changes in environmental conditions. These errors follow statistical distributions, and their impact can be reduced by applying statistical analysis, such as calculating the mean of a large number of repeated measurements.

2

What is transducer and give its broad classification with necessary explanation.

Answer

A transducer is an electronic device that converts energy from one form into another. In the context of instrumentation and control systems, it typically converts a non-electrical physical quantity (such as temperature, pressure, displacement, or light) into an electrical signal (such as voltage, current, or resistance change) that can be easily measured, processed, or transmitted.

Transducers are broadly classified based on the following criteria:

  1. Based on the Principle of Operation:
    • Resistive: The physical quantity changes the resistance of the element (e.g., strain gauge, thermistor).
    • Capacitive: The physical quantity changes the capacitance (e.g., capacitive pressure sensor).
    • Inductive: The physical quantity changes the inductance or magnetic coupling (e.g., LVDT).
    • Photoelectric: Converts light energy into electrical energy (e.g., photodiode, LDR).
    • Piezoelectric: Generates a voltage when mechanical stress is applied (e.g., quartz crystal).
  2. Based on the Power Source:
    • Active Transducers: These are self-generating devices that do not require an external power source to produce an output signal. They generate an electrical signal directly from the input energy (e.g., thermocouple, piezoelectric crystal).
    • Passive Transducers: These require an external power supply to operate. They change their passive parameters like resistance, capacitance, or inductance in response to the input stimulus (e.g., LVDT, RTD).
  3. Based on the Nature of Output:
    • Analog Transducers: Provide a continuous output signal that is a function of the input (e.g., LVDT, strain gauge).
    • Digital Transducers: Provide an output in the form of discrete pulses or digital code (e.g., shaft encoder).
  4. Based on Application:
    • Primary Transducers: The sensing element that directly detects the physical quantity.
    • Secondary Transducers: The element that converts the output of the primary transducer into a usable electrical signal.
