JNTU B.Tech IV TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT Previous Question Paper (July/August - 2022 - R18)
Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
Define the term quality. Briefly narrate the history and development of quality management.
Answer
Quality is defined as the totality of features and characteristics of a product or service that bear on its ability to satisfy stated or implied needs. It is often summarized as fitness for use or conformance to requirements.
The evolution of quality management occurred in four distinct stages:
- Inspection (Early 1900s): Focused on detecting defective products at the end of the production line using sorting and rework.
- Statistical Quality Control (1920s–1940s): Introduced by Walter Shewhart, this stage shifted focus to controlling process variation using statistical tools like control charts.
- Quality Assurance (1950s–1970s): Emphasized prevention of defects through systematic processes and documentation, involving all departments, not just production.
- Total Quality Management (1980s–Present): A holistic approach focusing on continuous improvement, customer satisfaction, and employee empowerment across the entire organization.
What variations do you generally observe in mean–range charts? How do you interpret them? Explain with examples.
Answer
Mean (X-bar) and Range (R) charts are used to monitor process stability. Variations observed in these charts indicate whether a process is in a state of statistical control or influenced by assignable causes.
Common variations and their interpretations include:
- Points outside control limits: A single point beyond the Upper Control Limit (UCL) or Lower Control Limit (LCL) indicates an assignable cause, such as a machine breakdown or a faulty batch of raw materials.
- Trends: A steady upward or downward movement of points suggests a gradual change, such as tool wear or operator fatigue.
- Shifts (Runs): A sudden jump in the mean level indicates a change in the process, such as a new operator, a different shift, or a change in settings.
- Cycles: Periodic patterns often indicate external environmental factors, such as temperature fluctuations or voltage variations throughout the day.
For example, if an X-bar chart shows a gradual upward trend, it typically signals that the cutting tool is wearing down, requiring maintenance. If the R-chart shows a sudden spike, it suggests an increase in process dispersion, perhaps due to inconsistent raw material quality or a loose fixture.
Do you think sample inspection is sufficient and efficient method in mass production? Justify your answer.
