Elaborate the role of J2EE in distributed computing.

8 marks

Answer

J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) provides a robust, component-based architecture that simplifies the development, deployment, and management of multi-tier, distributed enterprise applications. Its primary role in distributed computing is to abstract the complexities of network communication, transaction management, and security.

Key roles include:

  • Component Model: J2EE uses Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) to encapsulate business logic, allowing components to be distributed across different servers while maintaining a consistent programming model.
  • Middleware Services: It provides built-in services for distributed transactions (JTA), messaging (JMS), and naming/directory services (JNDI), which are essential for coordinating operations across heterogeneous systems.
  • Platform Independence: By running on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), J2EE ensures that distributed components can interoperate regardless of the underlying operating system or hardware.
  • Connectivity: Through the J2EE Connector Architecture (JCA), it enables integration with legacy enterprise information systems, allowing distributed applications to access data stored in non-Java environments.
  • Scalability and Reliability: The container-based architecture manages resource pooling and load balancing automatically, ensuring that distributed applications can handle high traffic volumes and maintain state consistency.
b

Discuss various challenges of Distributed Computing.

7 marks

Answer

Distributed computing involves multiple autonomous computers communicating over a network to achieve a common goal. This architecture introduces several significant challenges:

  • Heterogeneity: Systems often consist of different hardware, operating systems, programming languages, and networking protocols, making seamless communication difficult to achieve without standardized middleware.
  • Openness: Distributed systems must be extensible and interoperable, requiring adherence to published interfaces and standards to allow new components to be added or replaced without disrupting the entire system.
  • Security: Data transmitted over open networks is vulnerable to interception and unauthorized access. Ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and authentication across multiple nodes is complex.
  • Scalability: As the number of users or resources increases, the system must maintain performance. Bottlenecks in centralized services or network congestion can severely limit scalability.
  • Failure Handling: Distributed systems are prone to partial failures where some nodes or network links fail while others remain operational. Detecting these failures and recovering without data corruption is a major design challenge.
  • Concurrency: Multiple processes often access shared resources simultaneously. Managing synchronization and avoiding deadlocks or race conditions is critical for data consistency.
  • Transparency: Hiding the distributed nature of the system from the user (e.g., location, migration, or replication transparency) adds significant overhead to the underlying software infrastructure.
