A point F is 50 mm from a line AB. A point P is moving in a plane such that the ratio of its distances from F and line AB remains constant and equals to 2/3, draw locus of point P.

15 marks

Answer

The locus of a point moving such that the ratio of its distance from a fixed point (focus) to its distance from a fixed line (directrix) is constant is a conic section. Given the ratio (eccentricity) e = 2/3, which is less than 1, the locus is an ellipse.

  1. Draw a vertical line as the directrix (AB) and a horizontal axis perpendicular to it.
  2. Mark the focus (F) on the axis at a distance of 50 mm from the directrix.
  3. Locate the vertex (V) by dividing the distance between the directrix and focus in the ratio 2:3. Since 2+3=5 parts, each part is 10 mm. Thus, V is 20 mm from the directrix and 30 mm from the focus.
  4. Draw a line through F perpendicular to the axis. Mark points on this line by taking various distances from the directrix and drawing arcs from F with radius equal to e times the distance from the directrix.
  5. Repeat this process for several points along the axis to obtain multiple points on the curve.
  6. Join these points with a smooth, freehand curve to complete the ellipse.

Draw involute of a pentagon of side 25 mm.

8 marks

Answer

To draw the involute of a pentagon with side length 25 mm:

  1. Draw a regular pentagon ABCDE with side length 25 mm.
  2. Extend side AB to a point P1 such that BP1 = 25 mm.
  3. With B as the center and radius BP1 (25 mm), draw an arc to intersect the extension of BC at P2.
  4. With C as the center and radius CP2 (50 mm), draw an arc to intersect the extension of CD at P3.
  5. With D as the center and radius DP3 (75 mm), draw an arc to intersect the extension of DE at P4.
  6. With E as the center and radius EP4 (100 mm), draw an arc to intersect the extension of EA at P5.
  7. With A as the center and radius AP5 (125 mm), draw an arc to complete the involute curve.
