Draw a rectangular hyperbola whose directices are 40 mm apart and locate its foci and vertices.

7 marks

Answer

  • A rectangular hyperbola is a special case where the eccentricity e = √2.
  • Given the distance between directrices is 40 mm, the distance from the center to each directrix (d) is 20 mm.
  • Locate the center O. Draw the transverse axis and the two directrices perpendicular to it at 20 mm on either side of O.
  • Since e = √2, the distance from the center to the focus F is c = a × e, where a is the distance from the center to the vertex. For a rectangular hyperbola, a = c / √2.
  • Calculate a = 20 / √2 ≈ 14.14 mm. Mark the vertices V1 and V2 at 14.14 mm from O.
  • Mark the foci F1 and F2 at 20 mm from O (since c = a × √2 = 20 mm).
  • To draw the curve, mark points P1, P2, ... on the transverse axis beyond the vertex. Draw vertical lines through these points.
  • With F1 as center and radius equal to the distance from P to the corresponding directrix, draw arcs to intersect the vertical line. Repeat for the other branch.
b

Construct a scale of RF 1:40 to read metres and decimeters and long enough to measure up to 6m. Mark on it distances of 4.7m and 3.2m.

8 marks

Answer

  • Representative Fraction (RF) = 1/40.
  • Maximum Length (ML) = 6 m.
  • Length of Scale (LOS) = RF × ML = (1/40) × 6000 mm = 150 mm.
  • Draw a rectangle of 150 mm length and a suitable height (e.g., 20 mm).
  • Divide the 150 mm line into 6 equal parts, each representing 1 meter. Label them 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
  • Divide the first division (0 to 1) into 10 equal subdivisions, each representing 1 decimeter (0.1 m).
  • To mark 4.7 m: Start from the 4th meter mark to the right and move 7 subdivisions to the left from the 0 mark.
  • To mark 3.2 m: Start from the 3rd meter mark to the right and move 2 subdivisions to the left from the 0 mark.
  • Use a diagonal or plain scale construction to show these measurements clearly.
