Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Show that E - 1 = (1 - ∇)-1 - 1.

2 marks

Answer

The shift operator E is defined by E f(x) = f(x + h) and the backward difference operator ∇ is defined by ∇ f(x) = f(x) - f(x - h). From the definition of ∇, we have ∇ = 1 - E-1. Rearranging this gives E-1 = 1 - ∇, which implies E = (1 - ∇)-1. Therefore, E - 1 = (1 - ∇)-1 - 1.

1b

If f(x) = sin(px + q), find Δ2f(x).

3 marks

Answer

Given the function f(x) = sin(px + q), the forward difference operator Δ is defined as Δf(x) = f(x + h) - f(x), where h is the interval of differencing. Assuming h = 1 for standard finite difference notation:

Δf(x) = sin(p(x + 1) + q) - sin(px + q)

Using the trigonometric identity sin(A) - sin(B) = 2 cos((A + B)/2) sin((A - B)/2):

Δf(x) = 2 cos(px + p/2 + q) sin(p/2)

Applying the operator again to find the second difference Δ2f(x) = Δ(Δf(x)):

Δ2f(x) = 2 sin(p/2) [cos(p(x + 1) + p/2 + q) - cos(px + p/2 + q)]

Using the identity cos(A) - cos(B) = -2 sin((A + B)/2) sin((A - B)/2):

Δ2f(x) = 2 sin(p/2) [-2 sin(px + p + q) sin(p/2)]
Δ2f(x) = -4 sin2(p/2) sin(px + p + q)
1c
