Solve (3x y2 - y3) dx - (2x2y - xy2) dy = 0.

7 marks

Answer

The given differential equation is (3xy2 - y3) dx - (2x2y - xy2) dy = 0. This is a homogeneous equation of degree 3. Let y = vx, then dy = v dx + x dv. Substituting these into the equation:

(3x(vx)2 - (vx)3) dx - (2x2(vx) - x(vx)2) (v dx + x dv) = 0

Simplifying the terms:

(3x3v2 - x3v3) dx - (2x3v - x3v2) (v dx + x dv) = 0

Dividing by x3:

(3v2 - v3) dx - (2v - v2) (v dx + x dv) = 0
(3v2 - v3 - 2v2 + v3) dx - (2v - v2) x dv = 0
v2 dx = (2v - v2) x dv

Separating the variables:

dx / x = ((2v - v2) / v2) dv = (2/v - 1) dv

Integrating both sides:

ln|x| = 2 ln|v| - v + C

Substituting v = y/x:

ln|x| = 2 ln|y/x| - y/x + C

Which simplifies to ln|x| = 2 ln|y| - 2 ln|x| - y/x + C, or 3 ln|x| - 2 ln|y| + y/x = C.

Radium decomposes at a rate proportional to the quantity present at time t. Suppose that it is found that in 25 years approximately 1.1% of certain quantity of radium has decomposed. Determine approximately how long it will take for one-half of the original amount of radium to decompose.

8 marks

Answer

Let Q(t) be the quantity of radium at time t. The rate of decomposition is dQ/dt = -kQ. Solving this gives Q(t) = Q0e-kt. Given that 1.1% decomposes in 25 years, 98.9% remains:

0.989 Q0 = Q0e-25k
-25k = ln(0.989) ≈ -0.01106
k ≈ 0.0004424

To find the half-life (T), where Q(T) = 0.5 Q0:

0.5 Q0 = Q0e-kT
-kT = ln(0.5) ≈ -0.6931
T = 0.6931 / 0.0004424 ≈ 1566.7 years

It will take approximately 1567 years for one-half of the radium to decompose.
