JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech II ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY Previous Question Paper (September/October - 2023 - R16)

B.Tech | II | I | R16 | September/October - 2023

Answer PaperPaper Code: 133ANMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

What are various losses in a DC machine?

2 marks

Answer

The losses in a DC machine are classified into: 1) Copper losses (armature and field winding I2R losses), 2) Iron or Core losses (hysteresis and eddy current losses in the armature core), and 3) Mechanical losses (friction and windage losses).

b

Why is a starter necessary for D.C motor?

3 marks

Answer

At starting, the back EMF of a DC motor is zero. Since the armature resistance is very low, a direct connection to the supply would cause an excessively high starting current that could damage the armature windings. A starter introduces external resistance to limit this initial current to a safe value until the motor gains speed and develops back EMF.
