Part A

1.a

Find the complementary function of x^2 d^2y/dx^2 - 3x dy/dx + 4y = x^2 log x.

2 marks

Answer

The given equation is a Cauchy-Euler equation of the form

x2(d2y/dx2) - 3x(dy/dx) + 4y = x2 log x
. To find the complementary function, we substitute
x = ez
or
z = log x
, which transforms the equation into a linear differential equation with constant coefficients. Let
D = d/dz
; then
x(dy/dx) = Dy
and
x2(d2y/dx2) = D(D-1)y
. Substituting these into the homogeneous part gives
[D(D-1) - 3D + 4]y = 0
, which simplifies to
(D2 - 4D + 4)y = 0
. The auxiliary equation is
m2 - 4m + 4 = 0
, or
(m-2)2 = 0
, yielding repeated roots
m = 2, 2
. Thus, the complementary function is
yc = (C1 + C2z)e2z
. Substituting back
z = log x
and
ez = x
, we get
yc = (C1 + C2 log x)x2
.

1.b

Find the P.I of (x^2 d^2y/dx^2 + 3x dy/dx + y) = (1-x)^-2.

3 marks

Answer

The given equation is a Cauchy-Euler equation of the form (x2D2 + 3xD + 1)y = (1-x)-2. To solve this, we use the substitution x = ez, which implies z = ln(x). The operator xD is replaced by D' and x2D2 is replaced by D'(D'-1), where D' = d/dz.

Substituting these into the differential equation:

[D'(D'-1) + 3D' + 1]y = (1-ez)-2
(D'2 + 2D' + 1)y = (1-ez)-2

This simplifies to (D'+1)2y = (1-ez)-2. The Particular Integral (P.I.) is given by:

P.I. = 1/(D'+1)2 * (1-ez)-2

Using the method of variation of parameters or the formula for repeated roots, the P.I. is:

P.I. = e-z ∫ ez [∫ ez (1-ez)-2 dz] dz

Evaluating the inner integral, ∫ ez(1-ez)-2 dz = (1-ez)-1. Then, the outer integral becomes ∫ ez(1-ez)-1 dz = -ln(1-ez). Substituting back z = ln(x):

P.I. = - (1/x) ln(1-x)
