i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Define the distribution function of a discrete random variable X.

2 marks

Answer

The distribution function, also known as the cumulative distribution function (CDF), of a discrete random variable X is defined as the probability that the random variable X takes on a value less than or equal to a specific real number x. It is denoted by FX(x) and is given by the formula:

FX(x) = P(X ≤ x) = Σ P(xi) for all xi ≤ x

where the summation is performed over all possible values xi of the random variable X that are less than or equal to x.

1b

Describe terms joint probability and conditional probability with an example.

3 marks

Answer

Joint probability refers to the probability of two or more events occurring simultaneously. For two events A and B, it is denoted as P(A ∩ B) or P(A, B). For example, in a single toss of two fair coins, the joint probability of getting a Head on the first coin and a Head on the second coin is P(H1 ∩ H2) = 1/4.

Conditional probability is the probability of an event occurring given that another event has already occurred. It is denoted as P(A|B) and defined as P(A|B) = P(A ∩ B) / P(B), provided P(B) > 0. For example, if a die is rolled and we know the result is an even number (B = {2, 4, 6}), the conditional probability that the result is a 2 (A = {2}) is P(A|B) = (1/6) / (3/6) = 1/3.
