Note: Part A is compulsory (25 marks). In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit (50 marks).

Part A

125 marks
a

Define signal bandwidth and system bandwidth.

2 marks

Answer

  • Signal Bandwidth: It is the range of frequencies over which the signal's spectral density is non-zero or exceeds a specific threshold. It represents the frequency span occupied by the signal.
  • System Bandwidth: It is the range of frequencies over which a system (filter or channel) provides a relatively uniform response, typically defined as the frequency range between the points where the gain drops to 1/√2 (or -3 dB) of its maximum value.
b

Give the relation between bandwidth and Rise time of a signal.

3 marks

Answer

The bandwidth (BW) and rise time (tr) of a signal are inversely proportional. For a system with a Gaussian-like impulse response, the relationship is given by:

BW × tr ≈ 0.35

where BW is the 3-dB bandwidth in Hertz and tr is the time taken for the signal to rise from 10% to 90% of its final value.
