Answer PaperPaper Code: 124CUMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART-A

125 marks
a

Define relaxation time.

2 marks

Answer

Relaxation time is the time required for a charge density placed in the interior of a material to decay to 1/e (approximately 36.8%) of its initial value due to the material's conductivity. It is defined as τ = ε/σ, where ε is the permittivity and σ is the conductivity of the medium.

b

For the given vector A = (x+y) ax + 3ay + z2 az, Determine the unit vector in the direction of –A at the cartesian coordinate point (1,1,1).

3 marks

Answer

Given A = (x+y)ax + 3ay + z2az. At (1,1,1), A = 2ax + 3ay + 1az. The vector -A = -2ax - 3ay - 1az. The magnitude |-A| = sqrt((-2)2 + (-3)2 + (-1)2) = sqrt(4+9+1) = sqrt(14). The unit vector is a-A = (-2ax - 3ay - 1az) / sqrt(14).

c
