a
What is a linear network?
2 marks

Answer

A linear network is an electrical network where the relationship between the voltage across and current through any element is linear. This means that the network obeys the superposition and homogeneity principles. In such a network, if the input is multiplied by a constant, the output is also multiplied by the same constant, and the response to a sum of inputs is the sum of the responses to individual inputs.

b
Define Time Constant and write its significance in RC circuits.
3 marks

Answer

The Time Constant (Ο„) is a measure of the time required for a capacitor or inductor in an RC or RL circuit to charge or discharge to approximately 63.2% of the total change. In an RC circuit, the time constant is given by the product of resistance (R) and capacitance (C):

Ο„ = R * C

Its significance lies in determining how quickly the circuit responds to changes in voltage or current. A smaller time constant means a faster response, while a larger time constant indicates a slower response. It is crucial for understanding transient behavior, filtering, and timing applications.
