Find the transfer function Vc(s)/V(s) of the following electrical system (figure 1).

9 marks

Answer

For an electrical system consisting of a resistor R and capacitor C in series, the voltage across the capacitor Vc(s) is related to the input voltage V(s) by the voltage divider rule in the s-domain. The impedance of the resistor is R and the impedance of the capacitor is 1/(Cs).

Vc(s) = V(s) * [1/(Cs)] / [R + 1/(Cs)]

Multiplying the numerator and denominator by (Cs), we obtain the transfer function:

Vc(s) / V(s) = 1 / (RCs + 1)

This represents a first-order low-pass filter system where the time constant is defined as τ = RC.
