a

List the differences between open loop and closed loop systems with suitable examples.

8 marks

Answer

The primary differences between open loop and closed loop control systems are summarized below:

FeatureOpen Loop SystemClosed Loop System
FeedbackAbsentPresent
ComplexitySimple and inexpensiveComplex and costly
AccuracyLow; sensitive to disturbancesHigh; self-correcting
StabilityGenerally stableRequires careful design to ensure stability
MaintenanceEasyDifficult

Examples:

1. Open Loop: An electric toaster. It operates for a fixed duration regardless of the actual browning of the bread.

2. Closed Loop: An air conditioning system. It uses a thermostat to sense the ambient temperature and adjusts the compressor operation to maintain the set temperature.

b

Obtain the transfer function for armature controlled dc servomotor.

7 marks

Answer

For an armature-controlled DC servomotor, the electrical and mechanical equations are:

va(t) = Raia(t) + La(dia(t)/dt) + eb(t)
eb(t) = Kb(dθ(t)/dt)
T(t) = Ktia(t) = J(d2θ(t)/dt2) + f(dθ(t)/dt)

Applying the Laplace transform (assuming zero initial conditions):

Va(s) = (Ra + sLa)Ia(s) + Eb(s)
Eb(s) = KbsΘ(s)
T(s) = KtIa(s) = (Js2 + fs)Θ(s)

Substituting Ia(s) = (Js2 + fs)Θ(s) / Kt into the voltage equation:

Va(s) = (Ra + sLa)((Js2 + fs)Θ(s) / Kt) + KbsΘ(s)

The transfer function Θ(s) / Va(s) is derived as:

Θ(s) / Va(s) = Kt / [s( (Ra + sLa)(Js + f) + KtKb )]

Neglecting armature inductance (La ≈ 0) simplifies this to a first-order system:

Θ(s) / Va(s) = Km / [s(τms + 1)]

where Km is the motor gain and τm is the mechanical time constant.
