B.Tech | III | I | R13 | March - 2024

Answer PaperPaper Code: 115AMMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Define Fidelity.

2 marks

Answer

Fidelity is defined as the ability of an instrument to reproduce the changes in the input signal faithfully without any dynamic error. It represents how accurately a measurement system follows the variations of the input over time, ensuring that the output waveform is an exact replica of the input waveform.

1b

Outline the precautions to be considered while using Ammeters and Voltmeters.

3 marks

Answer

When using ammeters and voltmeters, the following precautions must be observed to ensure measurement accuracy and prevent instrument damage:

  • Ammeter Connection: Always connect the ammeter in series with the load. Never connect it in parallel across a voltage source, as the very low internal resistance will cause a short circuit, leading to excessive current flow and permanent damage to the meter.
  • Voltmeter Connection: Always connect the voltmeter in parallel across the component or circuit where the potential difference is to be measured. Due to its high internal resistance, connecting it in series would significantly alter circuit conditions and prevent proper operation.
  • Polarity and Range Selection: Ensure correct DC polarity (positive to positive, negative to negative) to avoid reverse deflection. Always start measurements using the highest range setting and decrease the range gradually to avoid overloading the meter movement if the expected value is unknown.
