PART A

1a

What is mean by Forward Error Correction codes?

2 marks

Answer

Forward Error Correction (FEC) is a digital communication technique where the transmitter adds redundant data to a message, allowing the receiver to detect and correct errors without requiring a retransmission of the original data. By embedding extra bits into the transmitted signal, the receiver uses a decoding algorithm to identify and fix errors caused by noise or interference in the communication channel, thereby improving reliability in real-time or one-way transmission systems.

1b

Derive the condition for block codes to be a linear code.

3 marks

Answer

A block code C of length n over a finite field GF(q) is defined as a linear code if and only if it satisfies the following two conditions:

  1. The code C is a subspace of the vector space V = GF(q)n.
  2. The sum of any two codewords is also a codeword in C. That is, for any c1, c2 ∈ C, their vector sum c1 + c2 ∈ C.

Mathematically, a code is linear if it is closed under vector addition and scalar multiplication. Specifically, for any two codewords c1 and c2 and any scalars a, b ∈ GF(q), the linear combination ac1 + bc2 must also be a codeword in C. A necessary consequence of this property is that the all-zero vector must be present in every linear block code.
