Explain in-detail about object oriented language interface. How manipulation of data is possible.

7 marks

Answer

An Object-Oriented Language Interface in mechatronics acts as a bridge between high-level software control systems and physical hardware components. It allows developers to represent real-world sensors and actuators as software objects, encapsulating both their data (attributes) and their behaviors (methods). This interface facilitates modular design, where complex mechatronic systems are broken down into manageable, reusable objects.

Data manipulation is achieved through the following mechanisms:

  • Encapsulation: Data is hidden within an object, accessible only through defined methods, ensuring data integrity and preventing unauthorized modification.
  • Inheritance: New classes can derive properties and methods from existing ones, allowing for efficient updates to hardware control logic without rewriting base code.
  • Polymorphism: Different hardware components can share the same interface (e.g., a 'move' command), allowing the system to manipulate diverse actuators using a uniform set of instructions.
  • Abstraction: Complex hardware-level register manipulations are hidden behind simple function calls, allowing engineers to focus on system-level logic rather than low-level memory addressing.

How was the discipline of mechatronics evolved? Explain the evolution stages.

8 marks

Answer

The evolution of mechatronics is categorized into four distinct stages, reflecting the increasing integration of mechanical, electronic, and computing technologies:

  1. First Stage (1960s): This era focused on the integration of basic electronics into mechanical systems. The primary innovation was the use of sensors and feedback loops to enhance the performance of traditional mechanical devices, such as the introduction of numerical control (NC) machines.
  2. Second Stage (1970s): The emergence of microprocessors and microcontrollers allowed for the incorporation of programmable logic. Systems became more flexible as control logic could be modified through software rather than hardware changes. This stage saw the rise of industrial robots and automated manufacturing systems.
  3. Third Stage (1980s): This stage introduced advanced control strategies and communication capabilities. The focus shifted toward system integration, where components were connected via networks. Artificial intelligence and fuzzy logic began to be applied to control systems, enabling more sophisticated decision-making in complex environments.
  4. Fourth Stage (1990s to Present): The current stage is defined by intelligence, miniaturization, and networking. It includes the development of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), wireless sensor networks, and the integration of the Internet of Things (IoT). Modern mechatronic systems are characterized by high levels of autonomy, self-diagnostic capabilities, and seamless connectivity.
