What are the various components of operating system structure? Explain the simple and layered approach of operating system in brief.

8 marks

Answer

An operating system is a complex software system composed of several key components: the Process Management, Memory Management, File Management, I/O System Management, Secondary Storage Management, Networking, Protection System, and the Command Interpreter System.

The Simple Structure is often used in small, limited systems (like MS-DOS or early UNIX). It lacks well-defined boundaries; the interfaces and levels of functionality are not clearly separated, allowing application programs to access hardware directly, which makes the system vulnerable to crashes and difficult to maintain.

The Layered Approach organizes the operating system into a hierarchy of layers, numbered 0 to N. Layer 0 is the hardware, and layer N is the user interface. Each layer is constructed using only the functions and services of the lower-level layers. This modularity simplifies debugging and verification, as each layer can be tested independently. However, it is challenging to define the layers correctly, and it can be less efficient than a monolithic structure due to the overhead of passing requests through multiple layers.

b

Explain the concept of virtual machines. Bring out its advantages.

7 marks

Answer

A Virtual Machine (VM) abstracts the hardware of a single physical computer into several different execution environments. By using a software layer called a Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) or hypervisor, the system provides each guest operating system with the illusion that it has its own dedicated processor, memory, and I/O devices.

The primary advantages of virtual machines include:

  • Resource Sharing and Consolidation: Multiple operating systems can run concurrently on the same physical hardware, improving utilization.
  • Isolation: Each VM is completely isolated from others; a crash or security breach in one guest OS does not affect the host or other guests.
  • Compatibility: It allows running legacy software or applications designed for different operating systems on a single machine.
  • Development and Testing: Developers can test software across multiple environments without needing separate physical hardware for each configuration.
