Explain the different classification of embedded systems with an example.

15 marks

Answer

Embedded systems are classified based on their functional requirements, performance, and complexity. The primary classifications are as follows:

1. Small-Scale Embedded Systems: These are designed for simple, single-task operations. They typically use an 8-bit or 16-bit microcontroller, have limited memory, and are not time-critical. Example: A digital camera or a simple electronic toy.

2. Medium-Scale Embedded Systems: These systems are more complex, often using 16-bit or 32-bit microcontrollers or DSPs. They involve more sophisticated hardware and software, often requiring an embedded operating system. Example: Industrial process controllers or networking equipment like routers.

3. Sophisticated (Large-Scale) Embedded Systems: These are highly complex systems requiring scalable processors, high-performance hardware, and sophisticated real-time operating systems (RTOS). They often involve hardware-software co-design and are used in mission-critical applications. Example: Flight control systems or advanced medical imaging devices.

4. Standalone Embedded Systems: These systems function independently without requiring a host computer. They take input, process it, and provide output directly. Example: A microwave oven or a washing machine controller.

5. Real-Time Embedded Systems: These are designed to perform tasks within a strictly defined time constraint. They are further divided into:

  • Hard Real-Time Systems: Missing a deadline results in total system failure (e.g., Anti-lock Braking System in cars).
  • Soft Real-Time Systems: Missing a deadline results in degraded performance but not system failure (e.g., video streaming or audio playback).

6. Networked Embedded Systems: These systems are connected to a network (LAN, WAN, or Internet) to access resources or communicate with other systems. They use protocols like TCP/IP. Example: Home automation systems or web-enabled security cameras.

7. Mobile Embedded Systems: These are portable devices with limited power and size constraints, often incorporating wireless communication capabilities. Example: Smartphones and wearable fitness trackers.

a

What are the operational attributes of an embedded system? Explain.

10 marks

Answer

The operational attributes of an embedded system define how it functions within its environment. Key attributes include:

  • Response Time: Embedded systems often operate in real-time, requiring deterministic responses to external events within strict time constraints.
  • Reliability and Stability: These systems must function continuously without failure for long periods, often in harsh environments, as they are frequently mission-critical.
  • Power Consumption: Many embedded systems are battery-operated, necessitating power-efficient design strategies to extend operational life.
  • Memory Usage: Due to cost and size constraints, these systems operate with limited memory (RAM and ROM), requiring highly optimized code.
  • Size and Weight: Embedded systems are typically integrated into larger products, requiring a compact physical footprint.
  • Maintainability: Systems must be designed for ease of updates, diagnostics, and long-term support, often through remote firmware upgrades.
  • Cost Effectiveness: The design must balance performance with production costs, as these systems are often mass-produced.
