Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

List the applications of DC amplifier.

2 marks

Answer

DC amplifiers are primarily used in applications requiring the amplification of very low-frequency or steady-state signals. Key applications include:

  1. Instrumentation and Measurement: Used in medical equipment like ECG and EEG machines to amplify bio-electric potentials, and in strain gauge bridges or thermocouples for precision sensing.
  2. Control Systems: Employed in industrial process control loops and servo-mechanisms to process error signals for motor speed or position control.
  3. Analog Computation: Used as operational amplifiers in analog computers for performing mathematical operations such as integration, differentiation, and summation.
1b

What is Cascode amplifier and write its advantages?

3 marks

Answer

A Cascode amplifier is a two-stage amplifier configuration consisting of a common-emitter (or common-source) amplifier stage followed by a common-base (or common-gate) amplifier stage. In this arrangement, the first stage acts as a transconductance amplifier, and the second stage acts as a current buffer, providing high voltage gain while minimizing the Miller effect.

The primary advantages include:

  • High Input-Output Isolation: It significantly reduces the Miller effect by keeping the collector-base voltage of the input transistor nearly constant, which allows for much higher bandwidth and improved high-frequency performance.
  • High Output Impedance: The common-base stage provides a very high output resistance, leading to higher voltage gain compared to a single-stage amplifier.
  • Improved Stability: By reducing the feedback capacitance between the output and input, the circuit is less prone to oscillations and instability at high frequencies.
