Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Define instruction pipelining of 8086 microprocessor.

2 marks

Answer

Instruction pipelining in the 8086 microprocessor is a technique where the processor overlaps the execution of different instructions to increase throughput. The 8086 architecture uses a two-stage pipeline consisting of the Bus Interface Unit (BIU) and the Execution Unit (EU). While the EU is busy executing a current instruction, the BIU simultaneously fetches subsequent instructions from memory and stores them in a 6-byte instruction queue, effectively eliminating the idle time of the execution unit.

1b

What is an assembler? Give any four assembler directives.

3 marks

Answer

An assembler is a software program that converts assembly language source code, which consists of mnemonic instructions and labels, into machine-readable object code (binary code) that the microprocessor can execute directly. It translates symbolic instructions into their corresponding machine opcodes and resolves memory addresses and labels.

Four common assembler directives are:

  • DB (Define Byte): Allocates one or more bytes of memory and initializes them with specified values.
  • DW (Define Word): Allocates one or more words (two bytes each) of memory and initializes them.
  • EQU (Equate): Assigns a specific value or expression to a symbolic name, which does not occupy memory but is used for constant definition.
  • ORG (Origin): Specifies the starting memory address for the subsequent code or data in the program.
