What is electromagnetic spectrum? How is it useful in Remote Sensing?
Answer
The electromagnetic spectrum is the entire range of all possible frequencies or wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation, extending from gamma rays (shortest wavelength) through X-rays, ultraviolet, visible light, infrared, and microwaves, to radio waves (longest wavelength). It is defined by the relationship:
where c is the speed of light, λ is the wavelength, and f is the frequency.
In remote sensing, the spectrum is essential because it allows sensors to detect and measure radiation reflected or emitted from the Earth's surface. Different materials (vegetation, water, soil, urban structures) exhibit unique spectral signatures, reflecting or absorbing energy differently across specific bands. By selecting appropriate portions of the spectrum—such as the visible range for color imagery, infrared for vegetation health, or microwaves for all-weather imaging—remote sensing systems can identify, classify, and monitor surface features that are otherwise invisible to the human eye.
What is the need of terrain evaluation? How do you interpret in Remote Sensing?
Answer
Terrain evaluation is the process of assessing the physical characteristics of the land surface, including topography, soil composition, drainage patterns, and geological stability. It is critical for infrastructure development, disaster management, agricultural planning, and environmental conservation, as it identifies suitable sites for construction while highlighting potential hazards like landslides or flooding.
In remote sensing, terrain evaluation is interpreted through the following methods:
- Stereoscopic Imagery: Using overlapping aerial photographs or satellite images to create 3D models, allowing for the calculation of elevation, slope, and aspect.
- Digital Elevation Models (DEMs): Derived from LiDAR or SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data, DEMs provide precise topographic data to analyze terrain roughness and drainage basins.
- Spectral Analysis: Multi-spectral data is used to map soil types and moisture content, which are key indicators of terrain stability and land-use suitability.
- Visual Interpretation: Analysts examine tone, texture, pattern, and shape in imagery to identify geomorphological features, such as alluvial fans or fault lines, which dictate the engineering properties of the land.
