a

Explain the historical perspective and evolution of virtual instruments and draw the block diagram of a virtual instrument and describe the functions of each block.

8 marks

Answer

The evolution of Virtual Instrumentation (VI) represents a paradigm shift from hardware-centric systems to software-defined measurement systems. Historically, instrumentation began with manual, mechanical devices, followed by the development of dedicated, fixed-function electronic instruments. In the 1970s and 80s, the introduction of the GPIB (General Purpose Interface Bus) allowed computers to control standalone instruments. The true revolution occurred with the advent of high-speed personal computers and Data Acquisition (DAQ) boards, which enabled engineers to create custom instruments by defining functionality through software rather than hardware.

A Virtual Instrument consists of three primary blocks:

  • Data Acquisition (DAQ) Hardware: This block acts as the interface between the real-world physical signals (analog/digital) and the computer. It includes sensors, transducers, signal conditioning circuits, and ADCs/DACs.
  • Computer/Processing Unit: The core of the system where the software resides. It processes the digitized data using algorithms, performs mathematical analysis, and manages system timing.
  • Software (User Interface): The virtual front panel that provides the user with controls (knobs, buttons) and indicators (graphs, charts), mimicking physical instruments while offering superior flexibility.
Physical Signal → DAQ Hardware → PC Processing → User Interface
b

Explain the programming languages used in development of VIs and describe the Lab view and its features.

7 marks

Answer

Virtual Instruments are developed using both text-based and graphical programming languages. Traditional languages like C, C++, and Python are widely used due to their robust libraries and low-level hardware control capabilities. However, Graphical Programming Languages, most notably LabVIEW (Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench), have become the industry standard for VI development.

LabVIEW is a system-design platform and development environment that uses a dataflow programming model, known as G-language. Key features include:

  • Front Panel: Provides the user interface with interactive controls and indicators.
  • Block Diagram: The source code area where graphical nodes (functions) are connected by wires to represent data flow.
  • Extensive Libraries: Built-in support for signal processing, mathematics, file I/O, and communication protocols (TCP/IP, Serial, GPIB).
  • Hardware Integration: Seamless connectivity with a vast range of DAQ devices, modular instruments, and FPGA targets.
  • Parallel Execution: Naturally handles multi-threaded execution, making it ideal for complex, real-time measurement and control applications.
