Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
Define Data Abstraction and discuss levels of Abstraction.
Answer
Data Abstraction is the process of hiding complex implementation details from the user and providing only the essential features of the data. It allows users to interact with the database without needing to understand the underlying storage structures or algorithms.
There are three levels of abstraction in a database system:
- Physical Level (Lowest Level): Describes how data is actually stored in the storage devices (e.g., blocks, indices, compression). It deals with complex low-level data structures.
- Logical Level (Conceptual Level): Describes what data is stored in the database and the relationships among the data. Database administrators use this level to define the database schema.
- View Level (Highest Level): Describes only part of the entire database. It simplifies interaction by providing different views for different users, hiding irrelevant details and ensuring security.
Discuss about different types of Data models.
Answer
Data models are conceptual tools used to describe data, data relationships, data semantics, and consistency constraints. The primary types include:
- Relational Model: Represents data in the form of tables (relations) consisting of rows and columns. It is the most widely used model due to its simplicity and mathematical foundation.
- Entity-Relationship (ER) Model: A high-level conceptual model that uses entities, attributes, and relationships to represent real-world objects. It is primarily used for database design.
- Object-Oriented Data Model: Extends the relational model by incorporating object-oriented concepts such as encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism, allowing for the storage of complex data types.
- Semi-structured Data Model: Used for data that does not have a rigid schema, such as XML or JSON documents, where tags or markers are used to identify data elements.
- Network and Hierarchical Models: Older models where data is organized in tree-like (hierarchical) or graph-like (network) structures. These are rarely used in modern systems due to their rigid navigation requirements.
Describe the Conceptual Design with the ER-Model.
