Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
Explain the concept of learning task and also explain the Find-S algorithm.
Answer
A learning task is defined by a system that improves its performance P on a task T through experience E. The goal is to develop algorithms that allow machines to generalize from specific training data to unseen instances.
The Find-S algorithm is a concept learning algorithm that finds the most specific hypothesis consistent with all positive training examples. It operates as follows:
- Initialize h to the most specific hypothesis in H (e.g., a vector of all nulls).
- For each positive training instance x:
- For each attribute constraint ai in h:
- If the constraint ai is satisfied by x, do nothing.
- If the constraint ai is not satisfied by x, replace ai in h with the next more general constraint that is satisfied by x.
- Output the final hypothesis h.
The algorithm ignores negative examples and only considers positive ones, making it efficient but unable to determine if the hypothesis is consistent with negative data.
What are the characteristics of well posed learning problems? Discuss.
Answer
A learning problem is considered well-posed if it can be clearly defined by three specific components: the task T, the performance measure P, and the experience E. A computer program is said to learn from experience E with respect to some class of tasks T and performance measure P, if its performance at tasks in T, as measured by P, improves with experience E.
The characteristics include:
- Task (T): The specific activity the system is expected to perform, such as classifying emails as spam or playing a game of chess.
- Performance Measure (P): A quantitative metric used to evaluate the system's success, such as the percentage of correctly classified emails or the win rate against opponents.
- Experience (E): The source of information or data provided to the system. This can be direct experience (e.g., a database of labeled examples) or indirect experience (e.g., interacting with an environment).
For a problem to be well-posed, these three elements must be explicitly defined to allow for the mathematical optimization of the learning process. The system must have a clear objective, a way to measure progress toward that objective, and a sufficient set of data or interactions to facilitate the learning process.
