What do you understand by a System? Discuss the characteristics of a system.
Answer
A System is defined as a set of interrelated components or elements that work together in an organized manner to achieve a common goal or objective. It functions as a unified whole, where the interaction between parts is more significant than the individual parts themselves.
The key characteristics of a system include:
- Organization: A system requires a structured arrangement of components to ensure efficient operation and goal achievement.
- Interaction: The components are interdependent; a change in one part of the system often affects other parts.
- Interdependence: No component acts in isolation; the system relies on the combined output of all its parts.
- Integration: Systems are designed to function as a single entity rather than a collection of independent units.
- Central Objective: Every system is designed with a specific purpose or goal, which acts as the guiding force for its operations.
Explain why Feedback and Control are considered as the Key System Concepts?
Answer
Feedback and Control are fundamental to system viability because they enable the system to adapt to its environment and maintain stability.
Feedback is the process of monitoring the system's output and returning a portion of that information to the input stage. It serves as a diagnostic tool, allowing the system to evaluate performance against desired standards. Without feedback, a system operates blindly and cannot identify deviations from its objectives.
Control is the mechanism that uses the information provided by feedback to take corrective action. It compares actual performance with planned objectives and adjusts the system inputs or processes to minimize variance. Together, these concepts form a closed-loop mechanism that ensures the system remains goal-oriented, resilient to disturbances, and capable of self-regulation in a dynamic environment.
