Explain with a neat diagram the Model of Symmetric Cryptosystem.

8 marks

Answer

A symmetric cryptosystem, also known as conventional or single-key encryption, uses the same key for both encryption and decryption. The model consists of five key components: the plaintext, the encryption algorithm, the secret key, the ciphertext, and the decryption algorithm.

The process follows these steps:

  1. The sender provides the original message, known as plaintext, as input to the encryption algorithm.
  2. A secret key is also provided as input to the encryption algorithm, which performs various substitutions and transformations to produce the ciphertext.
  3. The ciphertext is transmitted over an insecure channel to the receiver.
  4. The receiver uses the same secret key and the decryption algorithm to reverse the encryption process, recovering the original plaintext.

Diagram description: The model is represented by a source sending plaintext into an encryption box, which also receives a key from a secure channel. The output is ciphertext, which travels to a decryption box. This box receives the same key from the secure channel and outputs the original plaintext to the destination.

Write a detailed note on Monoalphabetic Ciphers.

7 marks

Answer

A Monoalphabetic cipher is a substitution cipher where each character in the plaintext is mapped to a fixed corresponding character in the ciphertext based on a static, pre-defined substitution alphabet. Unlike polyalphabetic ciphers, the mapping remains constant throughout the entire message.

Key characteristics and limitations include:

  • Mechanism: The cipher uses a substitution table or a scrambled alphabet. For example, if 'A' is mapped to 'D', every 'A' in the plaintext will always be replaced by 'D'.
  • Simplicity: These ciphers are easy to implement but offer very low security due to the preservation of the underlying language structure.
  • Frequency Analysis: The primary weakness is susceptibility to frequency analysis. Since the mapping is one-to-one and static, the frequency distribution of letters in the ciphertext matches the frequency distribution of the plaintext language (e.g., in English, 'E', 'T', and 'A' appear most frequently).
  • Example: The Caesar cipher is a simple form of a monoalphabetic cipher where the alphabet is shifted by a fixed number of positions.

Because the patterns of the language remain visible, an attacker can easily break the cipher by analyzing the frequency of characters or common n-grams (like 'TH', 'HE', or 'ING') to deduce the substitution mapping.
