JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech I Year APPLIED PHYSICS Previous Question Paper (January/February - 2024 - R16)

B.Tech | I Year | II Semester | R16 | January/February - 2024

Answer PaperPaper Code: 132AFMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Define elasticity.

2 marks

Answer

Elasticity is the property of a material by virtue of which it regains its original shape and size after the removal of the deforming force applied to it. A perfectly elastic body is one that recovers its original configuration completely and instantaneously upon the removal of the deforming force.

1b

Explain the terms in the rigidity modulus of a torsional pendulum.

3 marks

Answer

The rigidity modulus (G) of a material can be determined using a torsional pendulum, where the relationship is given by the formula:

G = (4π²IL) / (T²r⁴)

The terms in this expression are defined as follows:

  • I: The moment of inertia of the suspended disc or body about the axis of rotation.
  • L: The length of the suspension wire or rod.
  • T: The time period of one complete torsional oscillation of the pendulum.
  • r: The radius of the suspension wire.
