Part A
What is meant by memory segmentation in 8086 microprocessor?
Answer
Memory segmentation is a technique used by the 8086 microprocessor to divide its 1 MB physical address space into smaller, manageable logical segments, each up to 64 KB in size. This allows the processor to access memory using a combination of a segment register and an offset address, effectively enabling the use of 16-bit registers to address a 20-bit physical memory space.
Discuss briefly about pre-fetch queue in 8086.
Answer
The 8086 microprocessor implements a pre-fetch queue to facilitate pipelining, which allows the processor to fetch instructions while simultaneously executing the current instruction. This architecture significantly improves overall system performance by reducing the idle time of the execution unit.
Key characteristics of the pre-fetch queue include:
- The queue is a 6-byte first-in, first-out (FIFO) buffer located within the Bus Interface Unit (BIU).
- When the Execution Unit (EU) is busy executing an instruction, the BIU uses the system bus to fetch the next sequential bytes of the program code from memory and stores them in this queue.
- If the queue becomes full, the BIU waits until there is space available. If the EU encounters a jump or branch instruction, the queue is flushed, and the BIU begins fetching instructions from the new memory address.
